"Rocky says, OH Boy! Fall is here! Cooler weather, I get more hay, Halloween treats and I can scare the other horses!

But Scary Man says, Cooler weather tends to make a lot of horses drink less water which can lead to colic. According to several sources, colic is the number killer of horses. Now that's scary, Rocky! Horses and ponies who are well cared for with the best quality feed, fresh water and lots of outdoor time are less likely to colic, but any horse can colic.

Some signs of colic are: Biting at the flanks or kicking at the belly, pawing at the ground, sweating for no reason, standing in a stretched out position, rolling repeatedly and not getting up. Too many treats & an excess of grain can lead to colic. Make sure to buy good quality hay from a reputable dealer.

Start storing up your hay now before Winter. There are often shortages in some locations. Once the pasture has turned brown, there probably won't be any more grass until April or May depending on where you live. Figure on buying enough hay to maintain your horses weight until then.

Some horses that are called "easy-keepers" might be fine with only 1/2 bale of hay daily while others will need a full bale. It also depends on the weight of the hay. Find more horse care tips at this Site
