Guidelines for Adoption Equine Facility

Shelter: At least a three sided building with a roof with the opening facing away from the North; must be big enough for horse to walk in, turn around and lie down comfortably without getting cast (approx. 12’ x 12’). If more than one horse will use it, then multiple dimensions by number of horses. Should also have a way to close a horse up if necessary in order to make fence repairs or for the farrier or vet to work on the horse out of the weather. Construction should be of wood, concrete, metal or a combination, but must be sturdy, no tarps or loose boards, no exposed nails. Horse should not be able to kick through sides. Must also be tall enough so horse doesn’t rear & hit head on roof.

Pasture: Should be well established; if new at least 8 months to a year. Planted with an appropriate mix for horses. Must exercise control to keep out poisonous plants/shrubs. Nothing should be in pasture except a source of water; no tools, farm equipment, vehicles, nothing sticking up out of the ground. Some trees okay, but keep in mind: some trees are poisonous and horses will sometimes chew on trees and eat leaves out of boredom. There should be AT LEAST one half acre of grazing area for each horse in the pasture, preferably more.

Fencing: NO BARBED WIRE, NO HIGH TENSILE WIRE. Fencing should be at least 4 foot high. If plain electric, 3 strands & well flagged. Boards should be nailed on the inside, no loose or split boards, no exposed nails. Livestock fence should not have openings so big the horse can put its foot through.

Quarantine Area: A small area/stall needs to be available to keep a new horse separate for the first day or so.
